Can Van Nuys Become Another No Ho Arts District?

January 21st, 2010

Can Van Nuys become another No Ho Arts district?  Eric and Nora Sharp sure think so.  They are bringing their interactive murder mystery dinner theater sensation to The  94th Aero Squadron beginning February 13th, 2010.

“The San Fernando Valley always gets knocked but the fact is, it is a great place to live and raise a family.  Many people who live out here and West and North of the Basin just don’t want to sit in traffic to go in to the congested city and find parking and shlep around when they could be having an enjoyable, exciting evening of theater and gourmet cuisine without all the hassles.  Look, you can find  parking in the Valley.”

The 94th Aero Squadron Restaurant is a great hidden gem of the San Fernando Valley, hidden away off of Woodley near the Van Nuys Flyaway.  The venue is unique, elegant, with great food and service. The atmosphere is exciting and fun…it has all of the ingredients Eric and Nora Sharp look for in a venue for their shows.  (Sharpo’s Friday dinner theater location is the historic El Cid in Silver Lake and their overnight’s take place in the allegedly haunted landmark, Glen Tavern Inn in Santa Paula).

This writer seems to remember that before No Ho Arts became a cultural force in Los Angeles, Lankershim and Magnolia was just known as the furniture district.  A fellow named Jack took a chance and opened up a small cafe right across from all the furniture warehouses and put up a marquee.  The Ha Ha Cafe was born and over the years it became a world class comedy club, hosting name brand comedians to sell out crowds.  Sharpo’s producers are betting that they can duplicate this kind of success in Van Nuys with their interactive Murder Mystery Dinner shows and their brand new hit, “Dinner Court” which is an interactive comedy, murder trial.

Sharpo! Murder Mystery Dinner at The 94th Aero Squadron opens on Saturday, Feb 13.  The dinner, show, tax and tip is priced at $65 per person and the menu features appetizers, salads, choice of Roasted Tri Tip, or Grilled Salmon (Vegetarian options also available) with New York Cheesecake for dessert.  Seating is limited and reservations are required.  Call (818)909-9605 or visit sharpo.com to make your reservation.
